Must Visit Spots in Holland, Michigan

Updated: May 23, 2021

When I was invited to join a family trip up to Holland, MI, I was immediately excited! If you haven’t already noticed by the name, Holland has a rich Dutch culture in the town. To make it even better, there are some awesome beaches on Lake Michigan, as well as the only authentic windmill that still operates in the U.S! So to sum it all up, there are so many cool things to check out here.

Grab a Dutch Treat at DeBoer's Bakerij

If you’re looking to try some authentic Dutch food, you cannot skip out on this lovely restaurant! One side is the bakery, where you can get some sweet treats, while the other side you can dine-in. We decided to have lunch on our visit here, and were able to try a Dutch sampler that included things like croquettes and pea soup. Before you leave, make sure to grab some kringles (a sweet cookie/cracker treat) on your way out!

Frolic Through the Tulips at the Windmill Island Gardens

Holland’s most popular sight to see, the annual spring tulips, can be found here. If you visit between April and mid-May, you’ll find fields of the most beautiful tulips in an array of colors! What’s even cooler is that you can also check out and tour the U.S’s only authentic, operating windmill! It’s a pretty awesome sight, and makes for a really cool photo op!

Even if you visit during the tulip off-season, I still recommend going here! It’s basically like a giant park that’s lovely to walk around, and there’s some cool shops as well.

Cool Off with some Ice Cream at Captain Sundae

The perfect spot to check out during a hot summer in Holland is Captain Sundae. There are a few different locations, and they have SO many different treats to try! My future mother-in-law always raves about this place every time we talk about memories from our trip! The location we visited, right next to DeBoer’s, also had a cool pirate ship seating area that’s fun to hang out at!

Explore the Rich Culture at Nelis’ Dutch Village

This is such a cute attraction, and you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to a mini Holland! You can think of this place as a small theme park. You can do everything here from sampling cheese, try on a pair of wooden clogs, even pet some adorable animals! We had so much fun here, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Enjoy a Beach Day at Holland State Park

If you’ve never been to one of the great lakes before, just know that their beaches will make you feel just like you’re lounging by the ocean…. They’re stunning! Holland State Park seems to be the main beach of the town, and there are a bunch of different things you can do there. One of my favorite activities was kayaking out on the lake!

Take a Climb Up Mt. Pisgah

While you’re at Holland State Park, walk on over to the steps of Mt. Pisgah! It goes up over 200 steps, but once you get to the top you will see some amazing views of the park and beach! Be warned… It’s definitely quite the incline, but is totally worth it.

These are just a few ideas to get you started in Holland. For a medium-sized town, it sure does make for a great vacation spot!

Hey there, I'm Shelby! Traveling has been one of my biggest passions in life, and so I'm here to share all of my great finds, tips and advice that I discover along the way. When I'm not on a plane, you can find me in Kentucky with my husband and fur child, Zoe (My adorable kitty!)

I have always loved to write, and after many attempts at blogging again, I find myself here and inspired to share the world. My husband and I both work a typical 9 to 5, but make it a priority to plan as many trips as possible each year. I want to show others that it is totally possible to live a travel-filled life full time or on the side!

Thank you for stopping by, I hope you enjoy!
